A WW II Navy veteran, Fitch taught astronomy at the University of Arizona, where he mechanized the 36-inch reflecting telescope in the institution's observatory. An expert on pulsating stars, Fitch retired from the university in 1986. In retirement, he kept a detailed record of precipitation and temperature and corresponding bird and animal sightings along the Coronado National Forest border.
