Mauna Kea Summit
The summit at Mauna Kea (meaning "white mountain" in Hawaiian) is a short 10-minute walk from the road. This dormant volcano rises 13,800 feet (4,200 m) above sea level and 33,000 feet (10,000 m) above the sea floor. Its rust-colored cinder cones and rocky terrain gives the summit a striking Martian feel. Click on the image to see the medium-resolution version (2.7 Mb).
