The Hubble Sequence

Please take a look at what the SkyServer has to say about the Hubble Sequence. Keep in mind that not all astronomers believe that this is the ideal way to classify galaxies. In fact, some of the SDSS observers, who watch the sky scroll by all night, have commented that a large fraction of the galaxies they see can't be put into one of Hubble's categories.

Ellipticals

NGC 5846
NGC 5846, an E0 or E1, is the larger of the two ellipticals in this image. Even though these two galaxies appear very close, they are really almost 7 Megaparsecs (22.6 million light years) apart - too far to be currently interacting.
NGC 4261
NGC 4261 is the large elliptical in at the apex of the triangle of galaxies on the right. It is classified as an E5. It has a large black hole at its center.
