These images were taken by CARA Space Explorers 1999 at University of Chicago's, Yerkes Observatory.  They used a 10 inch Meade, F10 reflector telescope (focal length = 100 inches or 2540 mm).  The Space Explorers took their images with an SBIG ST-7 CCD camera on low resolution (pixel size = 0.027mm).  With HOU image processing software, CARA Space Explorers analyzed these images to determine the expansion pattern, wavelengths, and amplitude of the spiral density waves.

Try the Spiral Galaxies Lab for yourself!  Here are the spiral galaxy images taken by the Space Explorers.  These spiral galaxy images are composites of images taken by each member of the lab groups:  Heat, Sonics, and Rockets.

The "Spiral Galaxies Lab" was authored by Judith Lachance-Whitcomb, a talented Chicago Public School teacher, working with the CARA Space Explorers project during the Summer of 1999.
