SN 2002ap

In the south west regions of galaxy M74, a 'new' star is seen.  SN signifies supernova!

This image was taken by student Matt Seegers using the Yerkes Rooftop Telescope (HOU-ELM 10 inch Meade f/10, SBIG ST-9 CCD, clear filter, 75 seconds).  The University of Chicago's  Yerkes Observatory is located in Williams Bay, WI.   Matt, a student of teacher, Kevin McCarron, was operating the rooftop telescope remotely over the internet from Oak Park & River Forest HS in Oak Park, Illinois.
