HOU-IP Menu & Toolbars Go to the Apple Menu on a MAC or the Start Menu on a PC.  Choose HOU or Hands-On Universe Image Processing. 
Open

Click . Or, go to , and then Open.  Find the images, Tips-n-Tricks or Toolbox folder; select m57-ringnebula.fts. Then either double click on the icon or click Open.  You may have to choose "all files", to see the file name.
Status Bar Look for the status bar at the bottom right of the HOU-IP window.  It tells you the position of your cursor and the counts of the pixel for that position.  Pixel means 'picture element'.  If you move the cursor around on the image you can see how the status bar information changes.  Counts represent the amount of light that was captured at that pixel by the CCD camera. The status bar positions, x: 264, y: 240 show that the cursor is centered on the central star of the Ring Nebula.
LOG On the menu bar you will see You can click inside the box to activate log scaling of the color palette.  .  Try it!
Then click on log again to turn log scaling off. 
Color Click on the arrow and select a color such as RAIN for 'rainbow'.
Min / Max If you move the red and blue tabs, you change the brightness range of the image display.  You can also click inside the box with the numbers and change the numbers, then click Redraw or hit Enter on the keyboard. 

When you find the settings you like make a note of the min and max values.

 Reset Min/Max Restore the original Min / Max settings. On the menu bar, go to View and select Reset Default Min/Max.
