Jupiter Sequences
Fts Images
The Rooftop Telescope at Yerkes was put to work on January 18th, 2002 for six hours, 2:00 to 8:00 UT. Print out this page, cut out each frame, and make a flip book movie! Download these .fts images here, then use the HOU-IP software to analyze and combine images.
Which moon is which? In order of brightness, the moons are Ganymede, Io, Europa, Callisto. In order of distance from Jupiter, the moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto.
However, because we are looking at their positions from the side rather than from above, a moon's position could appear to be close when it is really far in front of or behind Jupiter.
Where are the moons in their orbits? Which direction is each moving?
Using the HOU image processing
software, add the images
all together. Or add,
subtract images in a pattern.
(Manipulation, Add, Choose Image File...)
Predict the position of the moons for the following nights! Sketch your predictions.
