Install HOU from CDROM

NOTE:   If you already have HOU on your computer, go into windows explorer and change the name of HOU program to  something like HOU-previous or HOU-old until you are sure of the new installation.   When you are happy with the installation, use Windows Explorer to move old images folders you wish to keep, into the new HOU-IP folder.

HOU Preferences

Go to Start, Open HOU IP.  .  Go to File, Preferences.

Notes:

IMPORTANT for Navigation to Images: Using \ or / for the images directory.

Images:  The default is C:\ etc.   However, if you replace the \ to a / anywhere in the path, then the program will go to the last folder you opened.  This is an advantage because you do not have to work your way through the image folders  each time you want to open a new image. We strongly recommend that you switch the slash to C:/

OR,   Images:  If you have C:\ followed by the path you want the computer to follow, the program will follow exactly that path.  This is an advantage if you are having students working on a specific lesson and want to set up each computer for that lesson. Delimit the path to the appropriate folder such as C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOU-IP\images\Images-High_School\1intro_ to_ image_ processing\  (This is a lot of bother, so unless you are doing a one time lesson, students should learn how to navigate folders.)

Palettes: This path should define the pals directory for HOU-IP.  C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOU-IP\pals

Temporary:  This path could be C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOU-IP\images or could be directed to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. You could even put a / slash  in the path to make the temp files stay with the folder you have opened.  It is not clear that there is one best place for the temp files or one best way to do this configuration.

Plot:  This path could be C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOU-IP\images or could be directed to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. You could even put a / slash  in the path to make the .plt files stay with the folder you have opened.  It is not clear that there is one best place for the plot files or one best way to do this configuration.

Note:  After you complete the table, you are instructed to exit and restart the software.  This is not necessary.  (False Warning. :)

HOU-IP Opens FTS Files.

This is how your software should work after installation. If the images are properly associated with the HOU program and the .fts file type is recognized, you will be able to see and open the .fts images from HOU-IP. File, Open, moon.fts.

You will also be able to open HOU images from the images folder in Explorer.  (Most of the time you will be opening images from the HOU-IP software, but this is a quick way to look at any image in your image folders from Explorer.)  For example, go to Windows Explorer, Program Files, HOU-IP, Images.   Double click on the image icon for moon.fts..

HOU-IP should open with the selected image for a "quick view".   Each image you click on will open a different HOU-IP window.

Setup File Types for FTS images

(If .fts images do not have the fits icon or if they don't open with HOU when you double click them from Explorer, configure File Types.)

Go to Start, Settings, and select Control Panel.

From the Control Panel Menu, go to Tools.  Select Folder Options, File Types.

Scroll through the registered file types.  Look to see if FTS file type is in the list. If so, select it. Look on the lower half of the window to see if "Opens with;" is followed by HOU.  If you do not  find the FTS file type or if the type is not associated with HOU,  see "if FTS is not on the list" below.

.

Click advanced to select Always show extension.

If FTS is not on list.

Add .fts file type for HOU.  Select NEW.   Type .fts in the file extension place.

Click Advanced.  If FTS File does not come up as the associated file type, just select <New> or Image Document.

If the Opens With section does not say HOU, then choose HOU from the Programs list or choose Other to browse for hou.exe.

*Add a Feature:  Add .fit file type for HOU
(This is for advanced HOU users who have access to their own images or images from other databases.)

Some CCD imaging programs save the CCD files as .fit instead of .fts.  If you want the HOU program to recognize .fit files, then create a New File type, as above, for .fit.  In "Opens With", select  hou.exe.
