Palmer's primary interest is star formation, and he has used a variety of radio astronomical techniques. Recent projects have included 1) measurements of motions of natural masers within very small regions with the Very Long Baseline Array and 2) using the VLA to image disks around newly formed stars. The ultimate goal of the latter study is to learn about planet formation.
