The Sloan Digital Sky Survey
An ARC-DSC drift scan of NGC4666
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is a large astronomical
collaboration focused on constructing the first CCD photometric survey
of the North Galactic hemisphere (10,000 square degrees).
The estimated 100 million catalogued sources from this survey
will then be used as the foundation for the largest ever
spectroscopic survey of galaxies,
quasars and stars. The prime scientific drivers of the SDSS are:
- The 3D large-scale structure of galaxies out to a median
redshift
of z=0.1.
- The morphology, surface density and evolution of galaxies.
- The large scale distribution and evolution of quasars.
- Systematic surveys of quasar absorption line systems.
- The structure of our Galaxy
