Carl Sagan Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Sagan Award, named for scientist, teacher, author and University alumnus Carl Sagan (A.B.'54, S.B.'55, S.M.'56, Ph.D.'60), is awarded to the Astronomy & Astrophysics graduate student who demonstrates an exceptional level of commitment to teaching. The recipients are chosen on recommendation of faculty who teach the undergraduate core courses or our outreach programs, and of students in the classes. The award includes a $500 cash prize, and is awarded on an irregular basis.
Donn MacMinn Award for Service Beyond the Walls of the University
The MacMinn award honors the life of Donald (Donn) Lee MacMinn, a graduate student in the department who died in an accident in August 1997 while riding his bicycle near Geneseo, Ill. In addition to his studies in the department, MacMinn shared his teaching skills and love of learning by tutoring South Side elementary and high school students in math and science. Recipients are nominated by faculty, students, and staff of the department. The award includes a $500 cash prize, and is awarded on an irregular basis.
