Postdoctoral Research Position in Submillimeter Astronomy HARVARD-SMITHSONIAN CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position working with the AST/RO (Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory) group at the Harvard- Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. AST/RO operates a 1.7- meter diameter submillimeter-wave telescope at the South Pole, engaged in spectroscopic observations of atomic and molecular species in the Milky Way and other galaxies. The South Pole provides a uniquely transparent site for submillimeter-wave studies of the interstellar medium. The successful applicant will collaborate on reduction, analysis, interpretation, and publication of AST/RO spectral line mapping data and may also propose independent research projects using AST/RO facilities. The telescope is currently equipped with helium-cooled SIS receivers for observation of the following lines: [CI] at 492 GHz and 809 GHz, CO (J=4- 3) at 460 GHz, CO (J=7-6) at 807 GHz, and CO (J=2-1) at 230 GHz. Two new array receivers at high frequencies will be installed in late 2000, providing significantly expanded capabilities. More information about the AST/RO project can be found at our Web site (http://cfa- www.harvard.edu/~adair/AST_RO). Candidates must hold a Ph.D degree and should have expertise related to observational and/or theoretical studies of the interstellar medium in galaxies. The initial appointment will be for one year and may begin as soon as a suitable candidate is found. The position is renewable for a second year, and possibly longer, depending on performance and the availability of grant funding. The current postdoctoral stipend at CfA is $42,000 per year. Applicants should send a curriculum vita, publication list, statement of research experience and accomplishments, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to: Dr. Adair P. Lane, AST/RO Project Manager, SAO, 60 Garden St., MS-78, Cambridge, MA 02138. Applications may also be sent by email to adair@cfa.harvard.edu. Consideration of completed applications will begin during the month of September. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
