Entrance to the Admundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
The aluminum geodesic dome is 50 meters in diameter and houses the galley, science buildings, computer room, living quarters for winter-overs, and other essential buildings. The entrance was originally above ground when the building was constructed in th 1970s, but blowing snow accumulates around the structure, steadily burying it. Every year, they have to bulldoze out the entrance.

This photo was taken in December 1997.
