DASI Winterover Position

The Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI) project of the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antartica (CARA) is seeking an individual to winter over (roughly Dec 2002 - Nov 2003) at the Amudsen-Scott research station at the South Pole. The DASI winterover will be part of a team of 4 CARA winterovers. The winter population of the base is approximately 50. DASI is an interferometric system designed to image anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background and determine its power spectrum from l = 140 to 900. The telescope includes 13 low-noise HEMT amplifier receivers operating from 26 to 36 GHz with correlation of the 78 baselines done in realtime in ten 1 GHz wide channels. The telescope was installed at the South Pole in during the 1999/2000 austral summer and is currently taking data. The winterover will have the responsibility of keeping the telescope and electronics operating. He or she will also be part of the DASI science team. Strong research experience in Physics, Astronomy, or Electrical Engineering is desired. The salary level will be based on the experience of the applicant. A large incentive for wintering over at the Pole will also be included. Candidates are requested to provide their CV and the names of three references.
