A SPACE SPECTACULAR
After their dramatic docking on June 29th, the Space Shuttle *Atlantis*
and Russia's Mir space station have been making some beautiful evening
passes over the U.S. and southern Canada. However, in the two months
since we prepared SKY & TEL's July issue, adjustments to Mir's orbit have
made the lower map on page 69 rather obsolete. So for an up-to-date list
see the SKY Online site on the World Wide Web (<A HREF="http://www.skypub.com">http://www.skypub.com</A>). Or
find the SKY & TELESCOPE postings in the GO SKYTEL areas on CompuServe, or
in the astronomy area of America Online.
WALLOPS'S 50th ANNIVERSARY
Aside from all the goings-on in orbit this week, a diamond anniversary has
occurred on terra firma below at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on
Virginia's Eastern Shore. Fifty years ago, on June 26, 1945, Wallops
hosted its first rocket launch and thus inaugurated the center's
distinguished, enduring role in aerospace research.
PROJECT PHOENIX
In the Australian outback, scientists have been using the giant Parke
radio telescope since early February to sweep the southern skies for
signals from extraterrestrial civilization. The first phase of their
search ended on June 27th, with nothing to report except more than 100
false alarms from satellites, aircraft, garage-door openers, and even a
microwave oven. But project scientist Jill Tarter said the search has
only just begun. This effort, called Project Phoenix, is being conducted
by the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. Now the equipment
will be moved back across the equator to conduct a similar sweep of skies
visible from the Northern Hemisphere.
NEW JERSEY's LOW-LIGHT EFFORTS
S&T columnist Fred Schaaf reports that he and others on the New Jersey
Light Pollution Study Commission held their first meeting on June 16th.
Schaaf is the astronomy representative of the 13-person state commission,
which also includes an environmentalist, lighting specialists, members of
several state departments, and representatives of electric utilities. He
says the meeting went well, and prospects look good for getting some truly
major reductions in skyglow over New Jersey in the next few years.
JUPITER: STILL BRUISED
Now that Jupiter is well up in the evening sky, you might be interested in
what's left of last year's comet impacts. Observers Daniel Fischer and
Carlo Hernandez got a really good look back in May, and Fischer reports
that southward of the South Tropical Belt there was still an obvious,
irregular, but not very dark belt that "didn't belong there." This impact
belt was quite extended in latitude, almost touching the STB.
EARTH's APHELION
Earth passes through perihelion in its orbit at 2h UT on July 3rd, when it
will be 152,102,000 km from the Sun -- 3.4 percent farther away than at
perihelion in January.
