SKY & TELESCOPE'S NEWS BULLETIN -- JULY 7, 1995
======================================================================

GALILEO PROBE RELEASE

A major milestone occurs this week for the Jupiter-bound Galileo
spacecraft. On Wednesday, July 12th, at 10:30 p.m. Pacific time, a large,
instrumented probe will be propeled away from the main spacecraft. The
probe will then begin a 80-million-km cruise to end on December 7th, when
it plunges into the atmosphere of Jupiter at more than 150,000 km per
hour. Then it will endure a deceleration of 350 G, and its heat shields
will be subjected to temperatures near 14,000 Kelvin. An end-to-end test
of the probe's systems and experiments was made in March, and all systems
appear healthy and ready. Measuring 1.25 m in diameter and weighing 335
kg, the probe carries seven instruments to measure the dynamics and
composition of Jupiter's hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. If all goes well
the descent should return data to depths where the atmospheric pressure is
20 bars. Incidentally, the probe's release this week could conceivably
jar loose the snared communication antenna on the main spacecraft, but
that is considered unlikely.

MARINER 4 REMEMBERED

Two days later will be a significant anniversary in the annals of
solar-system exploration. Thirty years ago, on July 14, 1965, Mariner 4
closed in on the red planet Mars and radioed 21 crude black-and-white
images back to Earth. Then the camera was switched off so other
instruments could return data. A few minutes later the spacecraft flew
within 10,000 km of the planet. Those pictures showed a cratered
landscape which, for a time, had some scientists thinking Martian surface
geology was much like that of the Moon. Later spacecraft would prove
otherwise. Mariner 4 was supposed to be part of a dual-spacecraft
mission, but its twin, Mariner 3, was lost when the protective shroud
around it failed to jettison properly after launch.

BEST-BET BLACK HOLE

A team of Japanese and European astronomers has detected the strongest
evidence yet that black holes exist. Telescopes aboard the Advanced
Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) have observed an X-ray
emission feature due to iron in a Seyfert galaxy situated in the
constellation Centaurus. The spectral signature indicates that the
emission is coming from a rotating accretion disk, and it also shows signs
of relativistic effects. Previous cases for black holes in the nuclei of
galaxies have relied on Newtonian mechanics to "weigh" the central object,
or on theories that describe how subatomic matter should resist
gravitational compression. But the new ASCA results demonstrate directly
the expected behavior of matter just outside a black hole's event horizon.

OCCULTATION UPDATE

For occultation watchers, note that there is an error on page 73 of July's
SKY & TELESCOPE. The occultation by asteroid 37 Fides occurs on the night
of July 15th, not the 14th.
