SKY & TELESCOPE'S NEWS BULLETIN -- JULY 14, 1995

GALILEO PROBE RELEASE

The Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft released its large, instrumented
probe on Wednesday, July 12th, at 10:30 p.m. Pacific time, and
confirmation of the successful deployment reached waiting engineers about
a half hour later. Barring any problems, the probe will travel 80 million
km and, on December 7th, plunge into Jupiter's atmosphere at more than
150,000 km per hour. Measuring 1.25 m in diameter and weighing 335 kg,
the probe carries seven instruments to measure the dynamics and
composition of Jupiter's hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. If all goes well
the descent should return data for 75 minutes, during which it will
descend to a pressure level of about 20 bars. That's about 90 km below
the top of the planet's opaque cloud deck. Galileo has already been in
space nearly six years, during which time it flew past Venus once, Earth
twice, and paid courtesy calls on the asteroids Gaspra and Ida.

BASHING NASA's BUDGET

Even as another Space Shuttle has taken to the skies, politicians back on
Earth are contemplating deep cuts in NASA's budget for fiscal 1996. A
House appropriations subcommittee has recommended eliminating $720 million
>from the agency's requested amount, which would (among other things) force
cancellation of the Cassini mission to Saturn. The subcommittee also
recommended closing three NASA centers -- Goddard, Langley, and Marshall
-- by 1988. The draconian measures have been greeted with considerable
protest, including from NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin and Congressman
Robert Walker, who chairs the House Science Committee.

SOLAR "RINGS"

The Ulysses spacecraft has detected periodic waves in the energetic
particles emanating from the Sun, an important confirmation that the solar
interior is "ringing" like a bell. Oscillations at the Sun's surface were
discovered about 20 years ago and gave rise to the discipline of
helioseismology. The principal vibration mode has a period of about 5
minutes. But according to an article in this week's issue of the journal
NATURE, such effects have not been observed before in the solar wind.
According to investigator Louis Lanzerotti, the oscillations are most
likely transferred into the solar wind by the magnetic fields that
originate deep in the Sun's interior.

TWO PLANETS AT OPPOSITION

Neptune reaches opposition on July 17th at 5h Universal Time, and Uranus
follows suit on the 21st at 18h UT. The planets lie a few degrees apart
near the border of Capricornus and Sagittarius. Uranus is currently
magnitude 5.6, and Neptune is about eight times fainter at magnitude 7.9.
