SKY & TELESCOPE'S NEWS BULLETIN -- DECEMBER 2, 1994
======================================================================

A FULL FOUR WEEKS OF THE MOON

Has anyone ever seen the Moon 28 nights in a row from the same site? No
modern record of such of a feat has been reported. This month may be your
best chance to try for a while. According to Robert C. Victor of Michigan
State University's Abrams Planetarium, because of the Moon's closeness to
Earth and northerly declination, observers in North America and Hawaii
have a good chance for success. To start, however, you will have to spot
the young Moon on the evening of Saturday, December 3rd, as well as the
very old Moon just before dawn on December 31st. Victor calculates that
during civil twilight -- when the Sun is 6 degrees below the horizon --
the Moon will be between 3 and 6 degrees up for most of the United States.
The farther west you are, the easier it will be to spot the Moon on the
3rd, but the harder it will be to find on the 31st. Of course, the likely
spoiler of such an effort will be having sufficiently clear skies for 28
days in a row. Good luck.

LEONIDS PUT ON "GOOD" SHOW

Although a full Moon interfered with watching the Leonids last month, many
observers reported a "good" show of this annual meteor shower. Tim Hunter
of Tucson, Arizona, made a report to Sky & Telescope of seeing several
bright Leonids from the northern foothills of town, and lamented that he
was not in a darker site. Joe Rao of Levittown, New York, reports that
radio monitoring of the shower the morning of November 18th showed a
"definite peak" at about 13:15 hours Universal Time. A December 1st
Circular from the International Astronomical Union reports that observers
in the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada reported enhanced activity. A
preliminary time of the shower's peak was estimated for 5 hours Universal
Time on the 18th with a possible zenithal hourly rate of about 100.

COMET BORRELLY HEADS NORTH

And Comet Borrelly continues to make it's way north, moving through the
constellation Lynx this week and still about 8th magnitude. A detailed
finder chart appears in December's Sky & Telescope on page 76. Here are
positions for the coming week, given in 2000.0 coordinates for 0 hours
Universal Time.
